United States - ATSC prepares 3D/DTT standard for end of year

The ATSC plasns to release its standard for 3DTV on the DTT platform by the end of the year.

It is currently exploring several options. One option is to provide two separate broadcast streams with one stream using MPEG-2 and a second stream using MPEG-4 AVC. Another option would be to broadcast one image using the DTT (ATSC) platform while the other image would use the mobile DTT (ATSC-M/H) platform.

It is not known how many viewers watch 3DTV services with content available from ESPN 3D, Wealth 3D and the satellite platform operator DirecTV. However, the number of 3DTV receivers available in homes is growing. In 2011, nearly 3.42 million 3D-capable sets were shipped to the US while a further 5.13 million sets are expected in 2012.
