South Africa - ICASA invites candidates to tender for mobile TV license

The communications regulator ICASA is inviting candidates to tender for broadcast license for the provision of mobile television services.

Two multiplexes have been set aside for the provision of mobile television services. This licensing tender is for the capacity on one of these two multiplexes.

According to the tender documents, the license holder must launch services within 12 months. In addition, each license holder cannot operate more than 60% of the total capacity of the multiplex.

All successful applicants will be invited to participate in a license auction. However, once licenses are attributed, license-holders are unable to sell their licenses to third-parties.

Applicants must apply for the license by 7 May 2010.
