Italy - RAI to make World Cup available in HD

The public service broadcaster RAI is planning to make its coverage of the FIFA 2010 World Cup available in HD on the DTT platform.

These HD services will be available from Multiplex 4 and will include all matches that RAI has the rights to transmit (the rights to the remaining rights are held by Sky Italia).

In addition, Mediaset Premium is planning to launch a new HD/DTT receiver for its On Demand service. This new receiver will allow Mediaset to distribute HD content directly to the receiver at night for local storage.

Currently, Mediaset Premium provides two Italian league football games each week in HD. When more frequency capacity is available, Mediaset would like to launch a movie service in HD.
